To paraphrase a commentary (I’ve long ago forgotten which), Van Gogh was enamored with indigenous culture. Kind of a reverse Babar the elephant. With abruptness fitting to Gogh’s own life, you could reverse the line “After Babar’s mother was killed by the hunter, he went to the big city” to “After he went out from the big city, Gogh’s ear was killed by himself.” Now there’s a cringe-inducing use of the reflexive.
